Research Foundation’s Property Company A/S (FEAS) has, in collaboration with Aarhus University, initiated an extensive new subproject in the University City. The project expands with 37,000 new square meters for study, research, and teaching facilities, primarily for Aarhus BSS. A central element of this project is the construction of a unique circular auditorium building with a capacity for 800 people.

The new auditorium building, designed by the architectural firm AART Architects with A. Enggaard A/S as the general contractor, and LYTT Landscape and NIRAS as engineers, represents a vision for a flexible teaching and study environment of high architectural quality and with sustainable technical solutions. The auditorium building will become Aarhus University’s largest and is strategically located in the University City, which spans 110,000 square meters and is part of the comprehensive renovation of the old municipal hospital.

The auditorium will function as a gathering point, aiming to create an open and welcoming environment where the boundaries between the city and the educational institution, student life, and everyday life are blurred, and where people can meet and participate in various activities. The study areas and classrooms are designed with great flexibility, allowing for various uses, ranging from lectures to cultural events and knowledge sharing, which are central to Aarhus University’s mission. The new facilities will also promote interdisciplinary collaboration between researchers, students, and businesses, thereby creating attractive opportunities.

The auditorium is divisible and can be partitioned in three different ways, allowing it to be configured to accommodate 200, 400, or 800 people when not divided. An auditorium for modern teaching naturally includes an advanced AV setup, but despite its high-tech level and complex AV system, there is a strong focus on user-friendliness. In addition to its primary function as a lecture hall, the auditorium will also be suitable for external events, such as conferences and symposia.

Stouenborg serves as advisors for FEAS and Aarhus University and is responsible for the complete design of the AV technical facilities to be installed. This results in an extensive tender concerning the complete AV system for the auditorium, which will be announced under SKI.02.70.

With this ambitious project, Aarhus BSS aims to create a vibrant and inspiring environment that not only supports education and research but also fosters a sense of community and engagement among all users. Aarhus BSS expects to welcome staff and students to the new facilities from 2025.
